What’s wrong
Under certain conditions the electrical terminal of the wiring harness connected to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) of the EPS slide causes abrasion on the tin-plating layer of the connector. This can cause wear debris to form which can accumulate and become oxidized. Occasionally the drivers knee may press against the lower cover when entering or exiting the vehicle causing the cover to press against the EPS wiring harness. This contact may result in the connector terminal sliding onto the electrical insulator (oxidized accumulation) resulting in electrical contact failure. The EPS ECU then turns on the EPS warning light/sound and steering assist stops.
The fix
Recall the vehicles that are likely to be affected and replace the EPS ECU and EPS harness.
