Checking second-hand goods for recalls
How to check a used car, appliance, pram or electrical item for recalls before you buy, and what to do if it turns out to be recalled.
Buying second-hand is good for your wallet and the planet. The catch is that recall letters go to the original buyer, not you. A few minutes of checking before you hand over the money is worth it.
Used cars, vans and motorbikes
Check the make and model on our car recall check or the DVSA’s service. If a recall applies, ask the seller whether the work was done and ask for proof, such as a dealer invoice showing the recall reference. A franchised dealer can check the manufacturer’s records using the VIN. Recall work is free, so an unfixed recall is not a disaster, but it is useful to know.
Appliances
Note the brand, model and serial number from the rating plate, then search for recalls on our recalls by brand page. Tumble dryers, washing machines and fridge freezers have all been subject to large recalls in recent years. Once you own the appliance, register it with the manufacturer.
Baby products
Prams, pushchairs, cots, high chairs and baby monitors are often sold second-hand. Check the brand and model for recalls, and make sure the instructions are included. Car seats are best bought new.
Electrical items and chargers
Be wary of second-hand chargers, power banks and e-bike batteries. You cannot see damage inside a battery, and cheap replacements are a common cause of fires.
If you find a recall after buying
Contact the business named on the recall notice. Most recalls cover the product whoever owns it now, so you can still get the repair, replacement or refund offered. A private seller is not usually responsible for a recall, but the manufacturer is.
