Hazard

The primary hazard presented by the LT13 conveyor is the risk of entanglement with rotating parts, including the idle roller at the exit end of the machine. The risk was highlighted by an incident in which a worker’s arm became entangled with the idle roller.

HSE’s investigation identified that the conveyor had not been safeguarded in a manner that complied with applicable Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSRs) within Schedule 2 of the Supply of Machinery (Safety) Regulations 2008 (which implements the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC in Great Britain), namely EHSRs 1.1.2. and 1.3.7. The EHSRs require machinery to be so designed and constructed that contact with moving parts of machinery is prevented.

Corrective action

The machine manufacturer in Italy has developed a fixed guard for the exit end of the conveyor, which is available to GB customers as an optional retrofit. Please contact your supplier for redress.
