What’s wrong
Through a self-disclosure by supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG Daimler Truck AG was informed that there may have been a manufacturing deviation in Unimog 405 and 437 model vehicles on the ball joints that are installed in steering components (e.g. drag links steering links tie rods). It cannot be ruled out that individual components did not fully undergo the prescribed hardening process and have therefore gotten into vehicles with insufficient material hardness. This may result in increased wear and in later phases reduced fatigue strength to the point of a possible fatigue fracture which would probably occur at low speeds with high steering forces (e.g. when maneuvering). In the event of such a fracture vehicle can no longer be steered and there would be a risk of accident.
The fix
As part of our planned recall campaign and as a precautionary measure we want to check whether insufficiently hardened components were installed in the potentially affected vehicles. Insufficiently hardened components will be replaced as part of the check.

How to check your vehicle
Use the official DVSA checker with your registration number to see if your exact vehicle is included. If it is, the manufacturer should have written to the registered keeper. The repair is free, even if you bought the vehicle second-hand.
